President Donald Trump (2017-20xx)
Policy
He continues to uphold one of his former campaign slogans, “America First.” In the realist view of relative gains, he commonly considers policy actions on what will be gained or lost by the U.S.. 10
Major Powers
Russia
His administration has been somewhat overshadowed by accusations and an investigation into his possible collusion with Russia to manipulate the U.S. 2016 election. His relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin is positive, despite previous strains in the U.S.-Russia relationship. 10
China
The primary focus of U.S.-China relations regards tariffs which his administration placed on China due to alleged “Chinese theft of U.S. technology and intellectual property.” Tariffs were placed in March and July of 2018, and both times China responded with Tariffs of their own, most recently on beef, dairy, seafood, and soybean products. 5, 10
Nuclear Weapons
He opposed the agreement with Iran which was carried out by the Obama administration. 10
NATO
He is not as interested in NATO activities, due to the demand on U.S. aid. 10
Terrorism
In alliance with Russia, he requested increased military funds to mount an offensive against ISIS and other ‘radical islamist terrorist’ groups. He also supports the torture of terrorists, as was carried out by the prior Bush administration. 10
Climate Change
He is opposed to the Paris Climate Agreement, and he announced in 2017 that he would be withdrawing from that agreement. Because President Obama had participated via executive order, President Trump is also able to do the same. 6, 10
Trade
Shortly after taking office, he withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership in which President Obama had participated. He also opposes the North American Free Trade Agreement which was arranged by President Clinton. 10
